I have also had various periods of unemployment, short and long, not fully recorded.

(1962-64): General Clerk, Associated Electrical Industries, Avonmore Trading Estate, West Kensington, London.

(1965-66?): 'Assisted' my father to run a village store in Hextable, Kent.
He had been made redundant about three times from his work as an engineer's patternmaker, and worked independently for a while until his business partner (Dicker) decided to emigrate, after which he took up shop-keeping.

(1967?-1973): Bonus Clerk, J. & E. Hall Ltd (later renamed Hall Thermotank), Dartford Kent.
At this time I also began to learn to do some printing using an Adana hand-press.

(1974-75): Editorial Assistant, Society of Chemical Industry, 14 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PS.
Preparing the magazine Chemistry & Industry for the printers.

(1975-76): Self-employed as letterpress printer, Walton-on-Naze, Essex.

(1976-79): Subeditor, Institution of Chemical Engineers, 165-171 Railway Terrace, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV21 3HQ.
Working on The Chemical Engineer monthly magazine.

(1979-80): Self-employed briefly as freelance. Some indexing.

Responsible for Transactions journal, including correspondence with authors, arranging refereeing of papers, copy editing, proof reading, liaison with printers, attendance at Editorial Board meetings. Also 'Special Publications' (A5 softcover books) and assisting in production of the 'Symposium Series' (conference proceedings).

(1985-90): Tried running a shop, Bohemia Road, Hastings, but gave up when the poll tax and business rate changes were introduced. At the same time I was also doing freelance editorial work, mainly proof reading, some copy editing and indexing.
